GUIDELINES WHEN APPLYING FOR SUPPORT
Applicants for grants, bursaries, conferences and publications are invited from researchers, educators and post-graduate students at South African or African institutions in support of projects involving palaeo-anthropology, palaeontology, archaeology and cognate disciplines. Such grants will be made to the relevant institutions involved for the use of the applicant or project concerned. Applicants from other African countries may apply, although preference will be given to applicants with an association to a South African institution. Applicants from countries outside of Africa will be considered, providing these applicants are working on projects within Africa, and preferably have an association with a South African institution. In addition, such applicants must provide reasons why their research is not supported by their own institutions. Applications for conferences and collaborations which will further PAST’s pan-African strategy will be considered. Applications from organisations with interests in the above-mentioned fields of palaeo sciences may also be considered. We also support scientific conferences, meetings and academic publications in these areas. Each application is considered individually and PAST does not enforce strict directives as each case has its own merit. Therefore, if you are unsure whether your application qualifies for consideration, please contact Ms. Leenen for advice.
Applications to be submitted together with the form entitled ‘grant applicant information’ (available from PAST or online) which must be completed and signed. Applications must be accompanied by a supporting letter from the institution involved, and explain the significance and feasibility of the project, together with a detailed breakdown of how the money will be spent. The applicant’s curriculum vitae and publication list are also required. Applications may be submitted at any time, but the grants will be awarded on an annual basis, with the understanding that yearly progress reports and financial statements will be provided. Applications must please reveal any other confirmed or potential sources of funding/financial support.
All correspondence relating to financial assistance should be sent via e-mail (in Microsoft Word format only). Applications should be no more than 6 pages in total and please do not include photos or sketches unless crucial. Application must be sent as ONE document or attachment (excluding ‘grant applicant information’ form). Please combine various documents required into ONE final document together with the grant applicant information sheet. The original document must also be mailed to the PAST postal address or hand-delivered to the PAST office.
